54. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? One should never judge a person by external appearances. Use specific reasons and details to support your answer. 

According to recent statistics on the internet, more and more attentions are paid to external appearances by an increasing number of people. Some people hold the opinion that appearances are one of the most significant criterions to judge someone for the simple reason that it reflects the status a person in the society as well as his characters inside. This idea is strongly opposed by numerous people who hold the opinion that judging a person by one glance at external appearances is totally foolish, as they usually hide most of the personalities a person really has. Consequently, after pondering this question on many occasions, I believe the former view is more reasonable. My arguments for this view are based on the following points.

The main reason is as an English proverb goes" appearances are windows of heart." That is to say a person’s insides and personalities can be reflected by his/her outlooks. A subject called “appearance psychology” that concerns people’s exteriors including body signals and behavior meanings, which is regarded as a branch of psychology, has been developed by this scientific prevail phenomenon. I would like to cite several examples to demonstrate it. Compared with someone who considers red or yellow dresses as one’s favorite, preferring black clothes indicates that the one is more introvert. Smile on one’s face represents friendship as well as bending one’s brows indicates insensitivity. Using this kind of theory to obverse your acquaintances, you will amazingly find that your judgments are fit the people’s real characters in most of the time.

The above reason is but one of many factors, in addition, people’s statuses and professions are easily exposed by their appearances, especially, by dressing. Take the uniform for example, students and “white collars” wear their distinct uniforms to go to school or the workplaces, is it hard for you to tell their own professions by the specific uniforms? A genuine gentleman never dresses like a beggar. On the other hand, even if a beggar wears high-priced clothes, it is hard for him to conceal his suburban qualities. “Snow white and seven dwarfs” is a worldwide known story. A fable although it is , there are deep meanings inside it that people who are kind are beautiful and people with bad insides will look bad as a witch at last. As can be seen from the above examples, the usefulness of judging people’s occupation by their external appearances is obvious and allows us no excuse to be against it.

Admittedly, there is little doubt that regarding a person by external appearances is to some degree like looking at the world through colorful glasses owning to the mislead of people being so-good outside but rotten inside. There are many prostitutes stand on the busy streets. It is obviously that they are excessively beautiful, but are they really righteous people? The most valuable aspect of human is the qualities in the heart, when appearances can not mirror one’s inside world, they may turn out to be mislead.

Actually, my only disagreement is that one should never judge a person by external appearances. It is foolish to doubt every friend for the only reason that one of them betrays you. Similarly, it is extreme to consider all of external appearances to be unbelievable because of very few faults met when judging someone by his exteriors.
