you are already very well-educated, what you lack is not another degree but work experience. I honestly don't think an MBA will help much and you cannot draw too much benefit from an MBA since you don't have any business experience.  Since you have a lot of theory behind you, the best may be for you to get the CFA and start looking for a job in finance-accouting related consulting job.  good luck

Thank both of you, with each sharing some good points.

I would like to get a finance related job in Sydney. However, the local market is relatively small and also narrow-minded. It will be pretty hard for me to break the ice and make an entry.

I am optimistic in the long term development of financial markets in China. This is the reason I am considering doing an MBA at CEIBS and land a job in Shanghai, preferrably IB, if not, I am happy working in Asset management or some securities companies.

Do I have a good chance of achieving that?

I think if you already decided to come back to china the earlier you move the better. Australia is relatively isolated, even though it's a nice and wealthy country, it doesn't have much impact on teh int'l national market other than in terms of natural sources deals.
you can apply to ceibs and other schools - if you don't try how do you know whether you qualify or not? Overall, you don't have a lot of business work experience so the earlier you start the better. IB job will be tough because of your age - are you willing to ditch your ego and work like a dog along side of people 10 years younger than you? I'm just trying to adjust your expectations.  But don't be discouraged, there are many good jobs out there like corporate valuation/consulting, asset management, etc.Especially if you get your CFA you can get into a more stable sector with good lifestyle.

very good points, thanks! The problem with Sydney's financial market is ithat t is basically controlled by local white guys who don't have either higher degrees or international experiences. Therefore the recruitment process is very short-sighted, with a lot of ex-patriates from London, HK or NYC rejected for "overqualification". This is laughable and pathetic. From my perspective, perhaps my best chance will be in China.

IB will definitely be tough for me and I fully agree with you that it's kind of embarrassing when you have to compete with those young guns ten years younger. Could you please further give me some advice on a couple of things:

1. when you said "Especially if you get your CFA you can get into a more stable sector with good lifestyle.", could you elaborate on that? What chances do I have if I pass all three levels and become a CFA charterholder? Why might I have better lifestyles? By saying that, are you kind of talking about investment management or secuties companies? Is there a high demand in these sectors in Shanghai at present?

2. I am an Australian citizen holding Australian passport. If I can get into CEIBS and graduate, do I have any work restrictions? Is it easy to get a working visa or permit? And what kind of salary level can I expect, given my relatively weak business experience?

Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

CFA may help you get an accouting job with big MNC's, after few years you can aim for assitant CFO or comtroller position. OR it may help you to get into the big 4 auditers. asset management is a new and growing sector in China. If you have some work experience that could be a good area for the future. In terms of securities, are you thinking retail? trading? that means you  have to have local knowledge and local network, so it could be tough for you to get into at first.  Overall, you don't lack education. you have to evaluate your personality and strengths to see what fits you.  If you go get an MBA, with your age/experience I think a realistic option would be consulting or equity research, which may fit you if you did well in academia.
Getting a work permit in China is not hard, you just have to find a company to hire you. But pay  for expats is getting localized more and more and varies greatly depending on industry. So my advice is if you want to move, move sooner rather than later, the longer you wait, the less attractive you become in the job market. companies are very reluctant to hire someone with a lot of certificates but no concrete experience. You might want to consider concentrating on an industry like real estate or energy, or something after you get some expereince in consulting or research.

Thanks a lot, it 's been very kind of you.

What salary range can I expect as a fresh MBA, I mean the local pay? I know it won't be very realistic to expect global pay.

you can look at some statistic reports on CEIBS or CK graduates. I can't really tell you because it all depends on the job. you can get paid something like 8500-15000/RMB month if you get entry level job in industry or 3 times that if you get into McKinsey.  Some foreign companies making an entry into china may be willing to match your previous salary up to a point so it can vary a lot.
