ISSUE 21

In this argument, the author contends that companies should base its job security and salary decision on the performance of the employee rather than on the years of service. I totally agree with this statement for the following reasons.

First, linking salary and job security with employees'  performance will motivate employees to work harder and thus improve the workers' efficiency  significantly and therefore improve the company's performance .Laziness is human nature and people will naturally grow lazy if there were no competitive pressure to lose job or no motivation to get more salary. One case in point is the Coal Mine company in my hometown. It was a state-owned company where salary is promoted gradually with the servicing year in the company and people there just wandered around everyday to kill time as their salary would be the same no matter how hard they work so long as they are still young in the company and of course that company suffers from waste and profits loss every year. In contrast, another coal mine company in the same city is a private-owned company where employee’s salary are closely related to their performance and people work very hard to keep employed there and get more salary. The later company is now on stock market for its good performance.

Furthermore, linking salary and job security with employees'  performance will  attract more young talented graduates to join the company. Young talented graduates are usually aggressive ones looking for bright future and high income. A company with rewarding system closely linking with personal capability and performance will sure attract more young talents than those basing salary decision on age. Because the former system provide a quicker and promising way for young talents to get promoted more quickly if they were capable enough. On the contrary, those companies will rewarding system linking to age are less likely to attract young talents because young talents will have less opportunities to exert their talents there under those senior authorities and they also often lack of motivation to work hard.

Third, basing salary and job security decision on mere age will hamper the employees' morale and creativity. As age is the only standard to decide one's salary and status in the company, young talents are less likely to express their creative ideas freely and this will do harm to employee's morale and creativity .Additionally, young are usually more creative than the old.

In conclusion, I support the policy that job security and salary should be based on employee performance because this is the effective way to enhance employ morale and drive them to work harder and more efficiently and thus improve the overall performance of the company and this policy will also help companies to attract more young talented graduates and promote creativity.
