Dear all, I would like to share some valuable information about Mays school. The content below is from a current student,Jason,who replied some questions of mine before on the Coffee Chat wbsite. Enjoy it! "Howdy Charlene, My name is Jason, MBA student in MAYS business school, class 2008. Congratulation to the admission, I am so excited to know that someone from Taiwan has finally received the admonition. Firstly, let me apologize for the English reply, I cannot type Chinese in school computer.
Little bit about the MBA program in MAYS business school. I saw many people have already told you a little bit about our school already. There are not many people from Taiwan in our program, sadly I am the only person that come from Taiwan in class 2008, and there’s only one in class 2007, before then, school had not admitted any Taiwanese for the past 10 years. And I have no idea how many Taiwanese classmates you will have, but the chances are, very slime.
Even though I am an Aggie (A&M student) myself, I can not only convince you to come. “Aggies don’t lie, cheat, or tolerant those who do.” However, I am more than willing to share some inside of this school. There are many great things about this school, alumni, weather, school spirit, and many more. But to save some time and for the sake of a lengthy paper, let’s cut it short.
“You might be the only one who speak Chinese in the class”
Meaning, most of your friends will be coming from local and all over the world rather than from Taiwan and China. This creates an absolutely the best environment to learn English language as well as to adapt American culture. For me, one of my reasons to come to U.S is to blend in with Americans, and with little Chinese in the program, that set up a great learning environment. On the other hand, many of the international students are already capable of speaking and writing English sufficiently; i.e. students come from India. Therefore, you will find a bit more challenged in this program since most professors have certain expectation in you English skills.
“Class size is small”
Yea, in fact, very small. There were only 88 students enrolled in class 2007, and 86 students in class 2008. (I believe UIUC enrolled about 200 students?)
Because the class is small, professors have more time for their students. In addition, most of the professors in the MBA program only commit to MBA and EMBA program, meaning, they will be available to you whenever you have questions. Moreover, they are all very willing to help; at least, I have not yet been turned down by any of the professors when I seek for help. Lastly, due to the extreme small class size, by the third week of the program, msot professors will know all of their students.
“School spirit”
I can hardly address in words but I can guarantee you that there’re no way any other schools in the America can give you the same experience. Imaging, thousands of people gather together practicing cheers at the night before football games (midnight yell). Imaging people gather together every month to show grieve to the people who die in that month alone with their families (silver tap). Imaging thousands of people gather together once a year in remembering alumni who die in that year (Mustur day). And thousand of graduates come back to school campus to cheer for school sport team. There are so many other traditions that make you bonded with the rest of the students in A&M. A&M is not just a school, but a family, aggie family (literally, family).
“High job replacement rate”
There are many more factors you should consider when it comes to a career decision. However, if you only see it from job opportunities perspective, A&M has a very strong and large alumni network in the U.S. As part of the aggie family, most of the alumni are more than happy to help you. In fact, they publish their contact information on the Aggie Association just to help other aggies in any ways (includes job replacement). However, if you consider going back to Taiwan upon you graduation, coming to here might not be as helpful as going to UIUC.
