还是不明白，为什么不选E呢？to protect 不是表目的吗？后面的分词结构就是为了说明items 或military equipment的作用呀？

这就是一类题：不定式缺主语，同时也是很少见的几种不选不定式的情况

这句话的主干中并没出现人类，因此to protect地发出者是不存在的.不定式表目的也只能是表达人的目的。

如果前面是这样写得：people use shields as essential items, to protect ...是可以的，

不定式表目的也只能是表达人的目的？ 这样子啊。。。

那进行时也能表目的吗？还是在这里其实并不是要表示目的？只是说明一下equipment的功能？

还有如果to protect前没有逗号，那么是不是就应该用不定式表目的了呢？

我记得好象是SVO,TO DO 就是错的. TO DO,SVO是对的.

没有逗号语法上是没错。

, + 分词 修饰前置词是ETS的考点。as you said, OG10: , used to protect 是对的。
