It's not strange to find a candidate with Engineering background, so the background is not an issue here. Finance phd application is so competitive simply because it has lots of outstanding students from different deciplines. Therefore, the question is how good you are and how strong you are commited to this career.
u need some additional experiences of finance to backup, like credits of some financial courses, or working experience that relates to finance,those are must.
