who cares whether they are employed by your company or contract sales?
leadership is different from management. if you can convince others, then you have leadership skills even if you don't have any subordinate.

i know a lady with 2-3 years accounting experience in Unilever received offer from several M7 schools. She joined tier 1 strategic consulting firm after graduation. Another lady in P&G (probably more than 3 years experience) went to a top 3 business schools and then join the same consulting firm.

I guess for top business schools, 3 years experience should be enough as many ib, consulting form or industrial companies prefer young people for their entrance global mba program.
