I'm in NUS MFE. Yes, I admit that NTU MFE has a better reputation here. I think this is due to a few reasons: first, it admits much less students (around 30 intake per year in NTU, while around 70 per year in NUS), therefore the average level of NTU MFE students is higher than that of NUS counterpart; second, NTU admits young students (average age: 26) while NUS admits many "old" students (average age:30). Those old students have left schools for a few years so that their math ability and self-study ability has decreased. Generally, young students can learn better; third, NTU MFE puts emphasis on math (including calculus, probability, statistics, stochastic calculus) and C++, while NUS teaches less on math (stochastic calculus is even an elective course) and teaches Matlab and VBA instead of C++. If you compare NTU MFE with NUS MFE as two groups, you can say NTU MFE is SLIGHTLY stronger than NUS MFE. But, in either group, there are some top students. And there is no evidence that NUS top MFE students are not as good as NTU top MFE students. Generally speaking, if you want to study MFE in singapore and find a job here, either NTU or NUS is a good choice and your future success will depend on yourself. If you believe you are smart and can be a top student, choosing NTU MFE or NUS MFE will be almost the same. |
