I would say if you aim at Top20, 730 compared with 700 makes no more sense. Your essays and interviews count a lot. My two cents.

true, you would better focus on your essays. The first 2-3 schools may take you 2 months

I have read an article regarding with the retake GMAT. It's said that generally speaking, the people who retake GMAT will earn 30-40 more than the original one just because he/she has the first GMAT experience. Based on this statics, the second 730 may not be better than the first 700. Of course, >740 can give you some benefits. my 2 cents.

as far as I know, only if you apply for stanford, will retaking GMAT make sense

They love people who score above 720. But unfotunately they like people who are young too, so stanford may not work for you either way

but for other schools, you are in good shape
