Motive   

The person of the Environmental Protection Agency came to company that I worked as a temporary laborer to impose penalty on air pollution, because the ammonia’s smell from aluminum dross and water in the company have already caused the air pollution. However, there is not one perfect treatment method to handle aluminum dross yet in Taiwan. My manager is worried about the problem very much; therefore, I’ve begun to do some research about metal materials and environmental pollution. During the process, I found out that this problem has been mentioned worldwide; moreover, many scholars have studied aluminum dross according to the element of aluminum dross. If I can learn material knowledge much deeper, I hope I can find the possible methods including solving the environmental problem of aluminum dross and reusing the aluminum dross. Therefore, material science and engineering field becomes my first choice to study further.  

University’s Life  

    I am responsible for detecting and examining in the company. There are many compositions in aluminum dross. Aluminum dross’s major composition are alumina, aluminum nitrogen and so on. However, some of the element will increase the company’s expenditure to handle aluminum dross. In order to figure out the making procedure of aluminum dross deeper, I took several related courses. For instance, in the environmental chemistry classes, I learned that during the smelting process, the liquid aluminum’s surface must react with air, and then the aluminum dross is produced. Besides, I suggested that closing the special crucible’s door to avoid from air, controlling the special crucible in the temperature as low as possible. Although my suggestions were just several steps, they really decreased the aluminum dross’s amount. Therefore, my manager approved my proposal. Furthermore, I gained working experience from the company. What is more, I applied what I learned from school to it.

   In addition, I was a member in the laceName w:st="on">SoochowlaceName> laceType w:st="on">UniversitylaceType>’s basketball team.,which has developed my individual skills of communication and respecting team work.. Researching is a team work, thus I am confident to be a good partner in a laboratory.   

Future Development

I found that aluminum dross could have 80 percent aluminum at maximum. Therefore, it is waste to take it as trash. However, to smelt aluminum needs high energy. On the other hand, recycling aluminum from aluminum dross will be an important work not only in the way of resources but also in financial side. As I know, there is advanced technology of dealing with aluminum dross in America. t It is an important motivation for me to study abroad. I believe there are various courses in UCLA, which can provide me relevant knowledge and enhance my professional abilities. Professor Alan J. Ardell’s researches and Professor Kanji Ono’s researches especially interest me. In the future, I will focus on：

1.          Dislocations and Strengthening Mechanisms in Solids.

2.          Analysis and Design of Composite Materials

3.          Manufacturing Processes

I was benefited from the company, moreover, I have a good background in chemistry field and a strong studying desire. These help me to research in the future. When I finish my graduate courses, I will devote my professional knowledge to the company and my country.
