各位帮忙看看两道语法题

这是两道pp语法题，请各位帮忙分析一下：

89. Prehistoric villagers tended to work harder, suffer

   from more diseases, and eat the poorer diet than

   nomadic hunters did.

此题我选“tended to"，根据一致性原则“tend","suffer" and"eat"。但答案为什么选“the"呢？

85. The various peoples who developed

   North America have made it a world

   leader economic .

此题中的“people“是指什么？people在什么情况下，plural要加“s"啊？

比较级前面不带the, people加s可能是是人的种类,和fish一样
