答案A

这题一看到我就懵了，首先the more... the more...这个里面有前后半句的一点因果关系，所以我排除D，但是有一个疑问是 increasingly本身不是已经表达“越来越”、“更加”的意思了吗？

而且我确实没想通A里面这个到底是什么逻辑？

所以纠结很久选了C...

不过这题我也没怎么看懂意思。贴一下Mitch的分析。

A: THE MORE the city air would become INCREASINGLY
D: THE MORE the city air became INCREASINGLY
Here, the more and increasingly are redundant.
Eliminate A and D.

In C, coming seems to be modifying the city air, implying a nonsensical meaning: that the CITY AIR was coming closer to town.
Eliminate C.

In E, noting the city air implies that Robert Angus Smith was noting the AIR itself.
Not the intended meaning.
Rather, Robert Angus Smith was noting what the air DID:
THAT the city air BECAME increasingly acidic.
Eliminate E.
