过去完成时的另类用法？

这是MGMAT里的句子， had eclipsed 的动作发生在was just one of new group 之后，为什么反而用过去完成时呢？求教～～

因为有less than 10 years later.

这种时态问题过于subtle，non-native speaker不用纠结，SC里一般不会有单独时态的split，有也不会是这么subtle的。
