Love this question! A lot of students underestimate the value and importance of visiting schools, and if you have the opportunity to do so... you should! Now, visiting doesn't mean you're going to get to sit down with the Dean of Admissions and WOW him with how smart and amazing you are so he remembers you and PERSONALLY fights for you to get in. That's just not going to happen, folks ;) But visiting does a lot of really valuable things for your application: it shows the school you are committed, it gives you a chance to actually SEE the campus and get a feel for it, and it provides you with a lot of great and spedific information (the kind you CAN'T find online!) to fill your essays. All of these things are going to be very, very helpful in the long run.
So, when should you go? The ideal time would be as soon as possible. April or early May, if you can swing it. That way, you can be on campus when classes are in session and you can sit in on a class, interact with students, etc. If that's not possible, the second best time would be to go in the summer so you can speak to that visit (and the great, specific things you saw/learned while you were there) in your essays. There won't be a lot of people around, but you'll still get to see the campus and - depending on the school - there may be some classes happening (1-year programs, etc). September or October does seem a bit late for Round 1 - it won't benefit you much to go AFTER you apply, unless you are on a Waitlist - but if there's a chance you may split some apps and apply to some programs in Round 2, that timing could be great because students will be back on campus and you'll get to have the full, full on-campus experience. And if that's the only time you can go, that may be a good reason to push some apps back to Round 2 so you can have that visit to draw from in your application essays.
There's a lot to consider here, of course, but to sum it all up: if you can go now, do it! And message me on We Chat so I can give you more advice on how to make the most of your time on that visit!
Cheers,
