I have been set up my own company before and will pursue MBA soon. The following is my opinion.
I would say that the knowledge get from MBA courses definately will help you increase the chance of success. The timing, the trend, your capabilities, which include your intellegence, network skills, foundation and experience, and your attitude will decide whether you can achieve your goal. The investment on MBA is still less. You know that after 1 to 2 years, you will get what kind of result without much variation. However, as an entreprenuer, you do not know when your business will turn profitable and the competition and outside environment change will make your effort gone without trace. Something like that the garment quota to EU this year changed many company's fate. You can try your best, but too many things are out of your control. My friend who got a big business with some rich guy from Anhui. However, not long after signing the contract, the rich guy was in prison, about RMB2.5 million goods are still in my friend's hand. I consider myself a risk taker, but not up to the extent to be an entreprener at this time. MBA may give me a starting point to focus on certain aspect of the business. The impact you make maybe even bigger than the impact you can have being a owner of a small business. Currently, I would like to be in a big pool as a small fish rather than a big fish in a small pool. Note, the small fish may be bigger than the big fish in absolute scale. * I hope I make myself clear. If you get confused, do not worry, so do I.
I think after some year's more experience on what I am interested in, I may consider set up my company again. At that time, my experience, network and foundation may lead me to stand a better chance to success.
At last, I feel that you can get entreprenuership from the MBA programs in Hongkong and mainland more than from the MBA programs in Singapore. |
