请教几道语法题

能不能解释一下这个用法 从金山上查到的

第一题centuries没错，之前有个and，

第二题remain是系动词后面接形容词或名词，故改为local； even though 没错，这里是一个省略，从句谓语是系动词，所以主谓都省了。

怎样的清楚呢?

第一题应该是C，不应加S。

第二题，remain作系动词可接形容词或名词作表语没错，但金山的例子和题中的还是有所不同。Peter became a judge but John remained a fisherman.　john是fisherman，The death of the innkeeper still remains a mystery.　death是个mystery.　可不能说MARYLAND是忠诚吧？但even though在这里好象是有些问题。晕！
