Topic: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Watching television is bad for children. Use specific details and examples to support your answer
At the mercy of the advanced technology, television has become a principal activity of everyday life, especially for children and teenagers. Consequently, people often debate that the influence of television has exert on children. Depending on different experiences, people may disagree with each other. Some may argue that TV programs can be harmful; on the other hand, some people suggest that television expand children and teenagers' knowledge. Due to my personality and experience, I would prefer television do no harm to children.
The most significant reason to support my point is that TV program have extended children's view, especially for pre-schooled ones, who have no chance to study in classroom. These adolescent spend their time primary in playing, watching TV. TV programs give them knowledge, including some that will be learned in school. Television helps children prepare their school lives. And the effect is obvious. Some program make children respectful, increase cognitive ability, and give them a right attitude toward harmony society.
Another equal crucial reason is that mass media is more vivid, which is more attractive to children. Television can teach words by showing short movies or pictures. In another hand, television can give teenagers some knowledge that they can not experience by themselves. Moreover, mass media is an effective way for education. In China, many famous teachers give lessons through on-line class, breaking the space and time limit, which make more children have the chance to receive the best education.
However, television also has its defects. Many educators maintain that television programs show too much brainless violence, sex, crime. And teenagers tend to think violence as a way to which they can resort to solve problems. And more and more adolescent show no fear to horrific violence. All these are what we are reluctant to see.
To sum up, from what I have discussed above, albeit television has its advantages, its merit really outweighs its flaw. In the modern society, television is a competent knowledge disseminator. So we can safely draw the conclusion that watching television does no harm to children.
