Upon to the question that which is better, requiring students to take classes in many subjects or requiring them to specialize in one subject, different universities have different opinions about it. According to my personality and fondness, I would prefer to specialize in one subject rather than take classes in many subjects. Afterwards, I will explain some of the most important reasons.
The first reason why I prefer specializing is that students can achieve more professional knowledge and skills by focusing on only one subject. Generally, the more the time and energy they spend on a certain field, the better students will understand and grasp knowledge in this field. However, if universities require students to take many classes on distinct subjects, students would probably feel tired and can hardly concentrate on any of these subjects. For example, a student who has spent four years studying PC and software will surely have much more special knowledge on IT than anyone who has only taken a few classes in this field.
A further reason to support my view is that universities could possibly enhance their educational qualities by offering a few rather than a series of different subjects. Schools achieve limited funds every year. If there are too many subjects in a single school, it would be very difficult for schools to allocate enough money to each subject. On the contrary, schools which offer only a few subjects can do so. With sufficient funds, students would have better conditions or facilities and excellent faculties. Thus, it would be much easy for them to study well and the whole educational quality would be improved.
The third, not the last is that students can have more spare time if they are required to study only a special subject. Too many subjects would occupy too much of students’ time. We are born not only for studying, but also for enjoying our lives. Students should also have enough time to go outing, watch movies, play soccer or just have a free talk with each other. As a saying in Chinese goes, “study and relax, neither could be neglected”. I can hardly imagine that a person would feel happy once most of his time were occupied by many subjects.
Of course, taking class in many subjects also has advantages to some extent. For instance, students may have diversified knowledge on different fields. But if all these factors are contemplated, the advantages of specializing in one subject carry more weight than those of studying many different subjects. Hence, from what has been discussed above, I personally agree with the statement that it is better for universities to require students to specialize in one subject.
