"With the increasing emphasis on a global economy and international coopetation, people need to understand that their role as citizens of the world is more important than their role as citizens of a particular country." People are divided over the issue of whether their role as citizens of the world is more important than their role as citizens of a particular country. However, I agree most wholeheartedly with the statement that every citizen assumes a role as a citizen of the world. First of all, globalization is invreasingly common in today's society. There is an ever-increasing need for alliamces and unions between countries. Individual countries can no longer thrive economically in today's world without international ties. The European Union and the North American Free Trade Association are example of economic alliances. Similarly, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a defense alliance. While these alliances have often led to issues with sovereignity and national pride, the countries realize that a slight forfeiture of national control to form international alliances is, overall, positive. While citizens mostly still identify themselves with a particualr country, they have shown the ability to sacrifice their national idnetity in the form of currency and joint external governments. For example, most members of the European Union have a sacrificed many national rights for coolaective sovereignty. The majority of the European electorate approved the constitution and agreements that led to the establishments of a national bank, free borders, and a common community currency, the Euro. The majority of a national citizens, in case after case, have realized the importance of being global citizens and playing an important part in the world community. Finally, it is necessary to discuss why people should be prepared to sacrifice some of their national identities for the greater good. Over the past twenty years, nationalism has been the main cause of major conflicts and warfare between mations who have been envious of each other's land and resources. Broad political settlements prevent the rise of fervent nationalism. In turn, to survive in today's global economy, everyone must be prepared to become part of it, and the global communities improve the economic prospects for all. Despite the old nationalistic rivalries of Europe, their citizens have chosen to combine with their neighbors in order to improve their economies and mutual defense. In summary, in order to survive economucally, individual's role in the international community is more important than in their own country. Because of the inevitable spread of globalization, citizens not only see the importance of being good global citizens, but also see that being global citizens is the surest path for national and personal success. |
