although copper was hammered into tools and ornaments by some early inhabitants of North America, the smelting and casting of copper were unknown between them.

I chose "were", because "the smelting and casting" is gerund, but anwser says no. need help.

but why the "were" is right? confusing...

A or B 用前一个谓语. （这个记的不是很清楚，如果不对请大家指正）

动名词就是主要表达动词意义的名词，但仍旧是名词。用AND连接以后还是等于 N1 and N2+ 复数谓语。
