Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Getting a university education is the most important factor in success.
The ever-increasing costs of college education do not seem to stop parents from spending half of their savings to send their kids to college. But a closer examination raises the question, “Is it worth it?” “Is having a college education the most important factor in a person’ success?” After a thorough consideration, I believe there are various influential factors in a person’s success. College education is one of them, but not necessarily the most important factor.
First of all, a college education offers tremendous benefits to a person. For starters, students can learn advanced levels of knowledge and skills which can prepare them for future professions. For example, if a person wants to become a lawyer or a doctor or a business leader, s/he must go to a college or a university to receive the necessary education and training. Otherwise, it is highly improbable that s/he can realize his/her career goal.
Second, besides career opportunities, students can learn many other important qualities and skills to be successful. Universities or colleges provide a wilder range of extracurricular activities to students, offering great opportunities for them to develop leadership, communication skills and other qualities. Internship program provided by universities can also significantly benefit someone because many companies tend to hire students with this kind of experience.
Finally, by going to colleges and universities, students can meet people of diverse backgrounds, widen their circles, and build valuable social connection. It is known that powerful alumni can give a big help to a person’s career. Different people have different perspectives and ideas. Understanding these things helps students to approach problems from different angels which can lead a better solution. Such kind of critical thinking is what a company want, leading to a better career and successful life of the students.
A higher education can contribute a great deal to people’s success in terms of professional knowledge and skills, important qualities and social connection, as we discussed above. However, to say that it is the “most important” factor is an overstatement. Other factors, e.g. experiences, character, personality, and hard work also play a role in one’s success. And many great men and women, for instance, Marie Curie & Abraham Lincoln, had not attended colleges. Many others dropped out of college or universities. Bill Gates dropped out Harvard. Steven Jobs dropped out of Reed University after only one semester.
In conclusion, I believe that university education definitely plays an important role in one’s success. If you have the opportunity to go to college or university, then be sure to make the best of it. If you have to earn a living after high school, do not give up because many other factors can make a person successful as well.
