004 It has been said, "Not everything that is learned is contained in books." Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?
Facing the choice of learning from books or experience, although I don’t deny the importance of learning from experience, I slightly prefer the idea of learning from books. The biggest advantage for book-learning method is its convenience. With the thousands of years’ experience, human kind has developed nearly infinite knowledge about the different aspects of the world. One individual can't master the knowledge just by his/her personal experience. For example, an IT engineer has no chance to gain the knowledge of ROMA history by own experience, but he/she can figure himself/herself into a ROMA history expert by reading and some logical thinking. Another reason why I advocate the book-learning method is that it provides the whole picture of object other than the partial information that the personal experience usually bring to people. I still recall a story my childhood teacher told us. 3 blind people touched an elephant. The one who touched the legs told people that elephant felt like a tree; the one touched one side of body insisted that elephant has a shape of wall; and the one grabbed the nose claimed with confidence that the elephant looked like nothing but a rope. Due to the diverse limitation we encounter, we may act like these three blind people in some level if we totally believe in the personal experience. The book will largely erase the possibility of making subjective mistake. Of course, experience-learning method also has own advantages. I can describe the blood circuit system of frog after nearly fifteen years since middle school is not because of boring textbook we learned in the class, but because of the vivid experiment I experienced. Experience can help people to develop deeper understanding of what he/she has learned, and also can help people to explore the unknown world. Innovation based on fresh personal experiment and experience is the way to maintain and impulse the development of human civilization. With the carefully consideration, I draw the conclusion that books have more advantages than experience in providing the knowledge to modern people. 欢迎拍砖,不胜感激 |
