Even with the skyrocketing tuition, tons of people still choose to pursue higher education each year, what do they have in mind? What universities have to offer? Is it merely the degree that lures people to devote four precious years of their lives to receive a college education?
it is plain to see that why degree is the sole goal some people after. The money and power a degree ultimately confers seems irresistible .A degree from a prestigious university, say, Harvard or Yale, does give a person an edge in the job hunting process. what's more, study shows that a university degree holder can earn at least three times more the total amount of money than one who only with a high school diploma throughout his\her lifetime .Though a college degree can not guarantee a well-paid job ,it certainly bring one near to that.
However, college has a lot more to offer. It is an ideal place to soak up in knowledge; I guess that's why people call a university ivory tower. For example, I am a university student right now and I just love the journey to explore the intellectual world. All the research I’ve done, the professor’s illuminating lectures, and the heated discussion in class are all very valuable to me.
In addition, I take leave to doubt that if someone’s sole objective is to get degree he will strive for academic excellence. My roommate Jack is a case in point, jack’s farther is a millionaire so the reason jack attend a university is to get a degree from a big name school to honor his family. Thus he is less motivated to get a “A”. All he need is a pass. With only a degree in mind, he can afford to skip classes, pay others to get his papers done, etc. personally; I feel that he has missed the bulk of the things a university education should have offered.
Enlarging one’s social network is another selling point of a college education. Getting to know other ambitious students will be a great asset in one’s career path. Take my father for example; he has always been the number one car dealer in his firm. Wonder where his secrets lies in. my father once told me that he could never make it were it not for his friends he picked up in college, most of those friends are now high achievers in all kinds of trade and also potential customers of my father.
In sum, admittedly, that degree is certainly what we want from a college education; it is far from the most crucial one. We had better not take such a myopic perspective, or we will probably miss the other great things offered by attending a college.
