Delta 4.1B

Pruning

In the lecture, the professor made several points about the wrong opinion on tree topping. The professor argues that tree topping not only will not solve the old problems, but will produce more new problems. However, the reading passage contends that pruning could improve the trees’s health, structure, or growth. The professor’s lecture cast doubt on the reading by using a number of points that are contrary to the explanation in the reading.

The first point the professor suggests to cast doubt on the reading is that topping will cause trees stressful and easy infected by disease, insects, which differ from the reading in that the reading states that small branches become targets for disease and breakage and should be removed. So the point made by professor casts doubt on the reading because removing small branches can not remove disease, on the contrary, it makes trees more fragile to disease and insects.

The second point the professor to cast doubt on the reading is that topping will cause trees break off easily especially in snowstorm. However, the reading states that cutting when branches and during cool weather, the wounds will heal quickly. This point is also controdictory to the lecture.

Finally, the professor states that pruning will destroy tree’s natural shape. In some view, the pruned shape is more ugly than the origianal one. In other words, the pruning not only will not enhance the shape and beauty, but deteriorate the natural beauty. This directly contradict what the reading passage indicates.

In the lecture, the professor makes several points about the wrong opinions
The professor argues that tree topping not only will not solve 有点拗口,"not only leave the old problems unsolved"会不会好些the old problems, but will produce more new problems. However, the reading passage contends that pruning could improve the trees’ health, structure, or growth. The professor’s lecture casts doubt on the reading by using a number of points that are contrary to the explanations in the reading.

The lecturer described a special process of pruning which run against the good use of pruning, that is topping, which means heavy pruning on top.

With an example involving a topped tree which came to be out control, the lecturer illustrated the following characteristics of topping:

(1) It stimulates, rather than eliminates, the growth of leaves and branches, which betray the principle of good pruning that enable only a few strong branches to remain;

(2) It increase the danger of disease and dead of branches, rather than remove diseased branches for the goodness of tree;

(3) On heavy remove of mature leaves, the tree would be easy to starve, and thus run against the aim of pruning to enhance tree’s health;

(4) It destroys the natural shape and beauty of the tree, while the purpose of good pruning is to enhance the natural shape and beauty;

(5) Finally, it could not hold the tree within bounds as the reading stated, and actually in the example case the topped tree got wild and influenced the traffic.

Simultaneously the lecturer has emphasized the importance of knowledge about pruning when looking after trees, for otherwise pruning like topping would cause more problems than it did solve.
