By far the majority of written references to Greek theatre date from several hundred years after the events they report. The writers seldom mention their sources of evidence, and thus we don't know what credence to give them. In the absence of material nearer in time to the events, however, historians have used the accounts and have been grateful to have them.

我选D 可以简化成..这些著作的references都是很久前的events they report.作者没有提到sources of evidence,我们怎么相信THEM.

没给出sources,所以排除B   这里主要不是讨论作者 排除C   很久前的事情我们并不怀疑,我们怀疑的是references...所以我寻D不选A

我觉得选D

偶的思路: 从"them"向前倒推,找与之意义相关联的词.可以发现在本句中,与之关联的词是"their",按意思理解就是,因为作者们很少给出their证据的来源,所以我们对them无从相信.然后再从"their"向前倒推,就比较容易看出,是指代"reference"了.

书上提供的答案是B。是啊，按我们中国人思维的话，D是很好的选择（也是我爱人的选择的答案），很难解释是B啊。

个人觉得and thus，说明该句是与前句紧密联系，them应该是指前面的“The writers seldom mention their sources of evidence”中的单词
