100. The following was written as a part of an application for a small-business loan by a group of developers in the city of Monroe . "Jazz music is extremely popular in the city of Monroe: over 100,000 people attended Monroe 's annual jazz festival last summer, and the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is 'Jazz Nightly,' which airs every weeknight. Also, a number of well-known jazz musicians own homes in Monroe. Nevertheless, the nearest jazz club is over an hour away. Given the popularity of jazz in Monroe and a recent nationwide study indicating that the typical jazz fan spends close to $1,000 per year on jazz entertainment, a jazz music club in Monroe would be tremendously profitable." Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.
In this argument, the author claims that a jazz music club in Monroe would be tremendously profitable. In order to strengthen the conclusion, the author provides several evidences such as jazz music is extremely popular in the city of Monroe and a nationwide study. These information seem to be logical to back up the conclusion; however, they are not enough strong to the argument. Unless the author makes more assumptions as follows.
To begin with, before the author points out the evidence that jazz music is popular to residents in Monroe , he or she needs to make several assumptions. First of all, as the author mentioned over 100,000 people attended Monroe’s annual jazz festival last summer. The first assumption is there had not been such many people attended to this festival. If the past years, every years there were almost 200,000 people attended to the festival, in fact, it was decline. In addition, it need to assume that other programs had low evaluations, otherwise the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is “Jazz Nightly” could not be convinced because of residents have less choices, hence, it would not be a strong evidence that people like jazz. Finally, a number of well-known jazz musicians own homes in Monroe just because of jazz, not for other reasons such as the living conditions or perhaps, before they become famous musicians, they had been lived there.
What’s more, to be valid evidence which is the nearest jazz club is over hour away, under common sense, people would not seek far and neglect what lies close at hand, so, the author had to assume that this coming club would appeal to residents who like jazz, could make them stay in the club. Plus, those who are big fans of jazz would give up the nearest club just for one hour away.
Before I make my conclusion, there is another points should be stated. The author would like to cite a nationwide study to bolster his or her conclusion; the premise is to do the following assumptions. In the first place, these study, like sample election, design of questionnaire, data processing are under scientific conditions. Also, the conclusion of study is impersonality and impartial. Beside, the conditions of Monroe such as economic standards, consumption tendency are applied to the nationwide study. Otherwise, this data is meaningless to this argument.
To sum up, the author provides certain evidences to support his or her conclusion. To make these evidences more logical and convincing, the author needs to depend on the above assumptions. If not, not only the argument is absurd but also the evidences are weak.
