Goals. You need to have them. If you’ve got a specific goal centered onfurthering your education you can target your MBA program search toward that goal. Do you want to keep your day job and go to class at night? Thathas a huge impact on your choice. Are you looking for an intense program withthe best professors and facilities? That’s a different program than the first.

The full-time MBA will provide tuition scholarships,which will help in paying for your degree. Part-time, online and EMBA willrequire you to seek help from your employer or take out loans. Each program hasits own value add and it will really depend on your goals as to which programstyle you choose.

If you havedecided to cross ‘the point of no return’ and change your career completely orif you want to stay within the same industry but change the location, a fulltime MBA program may be the best choice for you. This kind of format requiresfull commitment, but returns on the investment are also guaranteed. Thepart-time MBA is for those who want to advance their careers (without changingtheir professional venue and starting from scratch) but cannot afford to take‘leave of absence’.

To help with this, you need to know your goal. Whatconcentration will best help you achieve your career goals? Do you want tofocus heavily on International Marketing? Then look for a program that offersthat concentration. What are the hot new concentrations that will give you themost job opportunities? Many are still choosing finance or financialengineering. New areas include business analytics and supply chain management.Research your dream company. Which departments are hiring? What experience isneeded?

A university may have top-notch facilities and highly renownedacademic staff and still be the wrong choice for you. Research shows that location is a prime factorwhen it comes down to picking a business school. Make sure that you arecomfortable with the geographic area in which the university is located.For example, if you are bound by family or otherwise you may opt for a schoolthat is closer to home. If, on the other hand, you are looking for aninternational and diverse setting as well as new cultural experiences, anoverseas MBA may be a good option. The industry you want to work for may alsodetermine your choice of university location. If finance and investments areyour prime interests, then you’ll be advised to choose a university in one ofthe cities where the markets are based – New York, London, Frankfurt, Paris andTokyo

It is importantthat you pick the geographic area that best fits your needs as you are likelyto spend longer than two years there – a large number of MBA graduates decideto stay and pursue their career within the area of their business school. 5.    Lastly, I believe you need toaddress networking &career development. I think this is the most important aspect ofchoosing an MBA program. No matter how awesome the teaching is or how much youlearn, you will never conquer the world alone. You need teammates, colleagues,and friends. Does the MBA program have a dedicated Career Resource office? Or,do they use the same office that the undergrads use. Any top rated program willhave a dedicated staff to offer you the tools to enhance your career search.

You want to not only be able to work with and get toknow the people in your class, but alumni and friends of the program as well. An international alumni networkis critical if you are a global mover and shaker, but a nationally-basednetwork could be just as critical to someone who is forging a career in adefined market. By talking with graduates before you apply, you are in abetter position to know which type of network will suit you. You can also judge the quality of a business school by the profileof its graduates – their career tracks and their professional growth. Researchthe local chapter of where you would like to work and see what events theysponsor. You could even contact the chapter president and attend the nextevent. Having a successful alumni network is essential to networking.

I guess the biggest insider tip is to learn all ofthese things before you choose your program. It’s much better to find out aheadof time when you’re trying to choose an MBA program rather than later down theroad when you’re already in the middle of your MBA courses.
