TWE158 样板题

158 When famous people such as actors, athletes and rock stars give their opinions, many people listen. Do you think we should pay attention to these opinions? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

First of all, I want to qualify the topic a little bit. The opinions that I am discussing here are not concerned with respective celebrities’ specialties. We are not talking about Pele expressing his idea about who is going to win the next world cup (though in fact his opinion is not that right as we may have expected), or Michael Jordan talking about who is going to be the next air man. What I want to say a few words is whether we should listen to those famous stars showing their opinions about matters outside their specialties.

It is more and more becoming common that stars would like air their views about hot issues of the day. So we hear some singers talking about the policy of Mr. Bush and support him, or some others showing compassion to African people. Because of the fame of these stars, crowds of people tend listen to and follow their opinions. The question is “is it right”?

Before answering that question, I would first examine who those people are. Of course, being famous, you have to be excellent on some fields. They are unquestionably experts on those fields. I would not play one and one with Shaq for sure. But it does not necessary follow that they are also good at other areas. To put it further, we can even argue that most of the time, geniuses are bound to be not so good at other things because the god is equal to us and nobody is going to be perfect. Those stars’ ability to understand, reason and judge on daily issues are at most the same as ordinary people if not worse. There is simply no base to follow person who is by no means better than you are.

Of course, it is not always the case that opinions showed by these people are wrong. They may be right. My argument is that their opinion should not be raised any higher than Mr. Wilkins living next door to you. We should always use our own judgment to look at the issue instead of following someone blindly, especially those celebrities. One mistake that people always make is that when they like someone, they tend to like the whole of him. Arnold may be a good actor and surely a strong man, but these can not be the base to infer that he is good at governing a state. We should always keep a clear mind about why we worship this person. An idol is an idol in specific area.

In all, I have come to the conclusion that it may be fun to pay attention to opinions shown by those stars. We may get to know them well from another perspective. But never take their words as bible, because they just do not qualify.
