Topic 075

Should students be required to take classes in many subjects or to specialize in one subject?

When it comes to whether the universities should require students to take classes in various subjects or just to learn a particular subject, opinions differ from people. Some hold the idea that college students have to focus on only one subject in order to be an expert in this field after graduation. Others, on the contrary, maintain that learning a large range of knowledge in universities should be encouraged. Personally, I believe that having classes in different subjects is superior to specializing in one subject.

Admittedly, there are some advantages of focusing on one subject instead of studying many courses. The most obvious one is that people are able to study the subject in depth. For example, a student major in mathematics may have more time seeking for the solution to a complicated problem. Reading more books and listening to more lectures in math are possible for a specialized student as well. However, weighing both choices carefully, the benefits of having classes in many subjects are more significant.

First of all, students who have courses in lots of subjects often have wider outlooks and better social skills, thus they are more attainable to success in the future. A recent survey manifests that about 80% of the successful CEO in big companies had studied various subjects when they are in college, which shows the tight relationship between achievement and ample knowledge. A student who has lessons in more than one subject is more likely be versatile and flexible, compared with the one who is often considered to be dogged and sturdy focusing on one single subject such as astronomies and anthropologies . Moreover, since today’s work is more practical and integrated than ever, it often requires the individual to combine the knowledge in various fields together.

Furthermore, for most of the college students, especially young undergraduates, the career plans for the future are still uncertain. This means that they have to be familiar with a wide range of knowledge, which can not only provide them with lots of useful commonsense, but is especially helpful in furthering their career plans as well. It is the abundant knowledge gained from colleges that assists many people to accomplish their goals.

From what has been discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that having classes on a great number of subjects is better. Broader outlooks, better social skills, as well as the gorgeous helpfulness in one’s career are the main benefits of this statement. Therefore, the universities have the responsibility to conduct their students to choose right courses, meanwhile to carry out rules on compulsory lessons in order to cultivate a lot of versatile and talented people for the society.
