Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Business should do anything they can to make a profit. Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

 

 

With the rapid economic development all over the world, all the businesses are looking for opportunities to survive and make a profit. Of course, pursuing profit is inherence for a business. It seems that a business should do anything they can as long as it is helpful for making profits. But as far as my concern, I completely dissent this standpoint.

 

For one thing, a business absolutely cannot involve in the criminal activity. All the business in a market should obey certain regulation and laws to make sure the fair competition and not jeopardize other's benefit. A business could make a sudden huge profit by illegal active or trade, but it destines short-lived and will be punished by thousand factors of the attained benefits. And the business will be closed eventually. The criminal commercial activity is obviously unacceptable for a business.

 

On the other hand, to commit certain social responsibility is crucial for the repute establishment of a business. For instance, I am serving for a German chemical company, BASF, a leader chemical company in the world, it spend many resources to help many government,especially developing countries, solve the environmental problem. And the company set aside of a big deal of money to sustain charity fund all over the world. Normally, a chemical company is related to pollution and serious dangerous emission, BASF is believed a green company by the customers globally. Actually all these activities is money-consuming instead of profits-making, but it is really helpful for the company to create harmony relationship with local government and resident so that benefit to the long-term development of the company.

 

Last but not least, most successful businesses have their own Research and Development Center to support their business development especially for some high-tech company. Not all the research of new product can bring profits, but it is essential for the success of a business. In the online game industry, if a game is outdated and there is no better replacement, the company may be closed one night.

 

Anyway, as a system, business should focus not only on the profits, but also something beside of profit, namely, social responsibilities, development of the new technology and so forth. The sustainable development and profit is real profit.
