sorry, buddy, i just came back. Thanks, daisy, for yoru example. 1, sometimes, in which = where/when eg. This is the hause in which I live.=This is the hause where I live. I would assert that the above example is the same case. If E were "in which 49% of hausehold incomes are", it would be right.
2, in some cases, "in which" is prefered, rather than "where" or " when", mostly because of the idioms. The first sentence is a good example. It is in an age that great ice sheets had existed. It would be wrong if there were not 'in'.
