Indeed, honesty is considered by many people as one of most important and admirable traits of a person. And indeed in most case we should tell truth to people. However, it does not mean telling truth is the most important consideration in any kind of relationship. Human world is so complicated that there always exist a lot of exceptions.

In some case, white lie is allowed and even appreciated. For example, doctors may choose to hind the graveness of the ills to their patients in case that the patients were too desperate to give up the treatment once they know the truth. Or sometimes, teachers will tell their students who don’t make a good performance that actually they are very smart and encourage those students to work harder. And empirically, this kind of white lies work well. The encourages, praises, comforts make people more confident, and even sometimes those people turn the lie into realities.

And in some occasions, we’d better not to tell out the truth if the truth would cause even more troubles and hurt some people. For example, when one of your friends said something bad about another person you know, it will do nothing good if you tell the truth to that person. That’s also why parents may conceal some family secrets to their children until they are mature enough to accept. And it also can explain why some countries blackout some of the files that may lead to world war.  As the old saying put “ a considering liar is better than a troublesome truth teller. “

Further more, in all respects of human society, there exists also some kind of underlying game rules which give a quiet nod to the lie in a certain degree. For example, the employee should not critic its own company’s policy publicly even he is not satisfied company’s some behaviors. And in some countries, the subsidies should not censure their leader directly. The people who just tell the truth out countless of the result will be considered just as a fool or not mature enough.

From all the case above, we can see telling truth is neither the unique nor the most important factor when we are faced with the complex world. We should be honest yet be wise enough to judge in each specific case if we should tell the true or just keep silence, even sometime, say some white lies. It’s not easy to make the right decision every time, but the effort is worthwhile.
