145. Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy things we really do not need. Others say that advertisements tell us about new products that may improve our lives. Which viewpoint do you agree with? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Advertisement has reached the epidemic proportions since last century. The applying of television, computer and other technologies allows it to reach almost every aspect of our daily life. Along with this phenomenon elicits a controversy about whether the advertisement is useful to improve life standard or it just produce unnecessary good. Due to the distinct background and experience, options vary from person to person, culture to culture. As far as I concerned, I can not find any empirical evidence to wholly stand by any side. In the following paragraphs, my point will be totally demonstrated. In the first place, advertisement serves as an instrument for business with an aim to increase sell. According to this main function, advertisement does provide useful information about certain commodities, especially the new inventions that can hardly be accessed in the daily life. Take cell phones for example, without the advertisement, people would have no ideas about current cell phones obtain many functions, such as taking photos, receiving emails and so on, which are quite different from the original functions. Life will be more convenient immediately after using this kind of cell phone since you do not need to bring other things, In a word, the advertisement does supply the updated technology information to encourage people Admittedly, there are too many kinds of advertisements in daily life. A quite considerable part of them may attempt to persuade people to buy things which are unnecessary. For example, in a cosmetic advertisement, a girl with pretty face and fashion clothes illustrates the perfect effect of the cosmetic. It is quite likely that this kind of cosmetic is suitable for pretty girls like the model. It can hardly generate any conclusion that the cosmetic would have the same positive effect on the other people from the advertisement from the perspective of logic. However, this is just the simple method the advertisement use to persuade people. To sum up, the evidence above justices that the advertisements are considered to be a mixed blessing. As the popular saying goes; “ coins have two sides.” The information combined with advertisements is diverse. So it is a little too arbitrary to conclude all the information is useful, or vice verse. After a case to case examination, we can safely jump to a more apparent conclusion that it depends on the people’s judgment when confronting millions of advertisements. |
