His studies of ice-polished rocks in his Alpine homeland, far outside the range of present-day glaciers, led Louis Agassiz in 1837 to propose the concept of an age in which great ice sheets had existed in now currently temperate areas.
(A) in which great ice sheets had existed in now currently temperate areas
(B) in which great ice sheets existed in what are now temperate areas
(C) when great ice sheets existed where there were areas now temperate
(D) when great ice sheets had existed in current temperate areas
(E) when great ice sheets existed in areas now that are temperate

the key is b.

虽然in areas that are now temperate似乎也能表达出句子的意思,但是,in what are now temperate areas在这种情况下更为常见。

It is impossible that great ice sheets still exist in areas now that are...

Be careful to the position of "now"...

1. age 与 in which 搭配,(XDF的理论,暂时没有例外,姑且记着是固定搭配);

2. now 的位置有修饰歧义:a. 修饰existed, b.修饰that are temperate;

3. sth. that + be + adj.

"areas that are now temperate" 指现在是温带的那些地区,(以前也许是寒带或是热带)

areas now that are temperate
