OG 146的题目是:
146. A patient accusing a doctor of malpractice will find it difficult to prove damage if there is a lack of some other doctor to testify about proper medical procedures.
(A) if there is a lack of some other doctor to testify
(B) unless there will be another doctor to testify
(C) without another doctor's testimony
(D) should there be no testimony from some other doctor
(E) lacking another doctor to testify
OG的解释是:
Only C, the best choice, manages to convey the meaning of the sentence efficiently and idiomatically. Choices A and D are plagued by awkwardness and wordiness. Choice A also introduces the unidiomatic phrase lack of some other doctor. Choice B incorrectly uses a future-tense verb (will be) in the if clause; the if clause must use the present tense if it is preceded, as here, by a result clause that uses a future-tense verb (e.g., will find). Choice E introduces a dangling modifier: the lacking ... phrase cannot logically modify damage, the nearest noun.
107. Downzoning, zoning that typically results in the reduction of housing density, allows for more open space in areas where little water or services exist.
(A) little water or services exist
(B) little water or services exists
(C) few services and little water exists
(D) there is little water or services available
(E) there are few services and little available water
The adjective little modifies "mass nouns" (e.g., water), which refer to some undifferentiated quantity; the adjective few modifies "count nouns" (e.g., services), which refer to groups made up of distinct members that can be considered individually. Hence, choices A, B, and D are incorrect because little cannot properly modify services. Also, since water and services are being discussed as a pair, they should logically be treated as a compound subject requiring a plural verb; thus, the singular verbs exists (in B and C) and is (in D) are wrong. Choice E is best: the plural verb are is used, and few correctly modifies services.
谢谢bloodcherry举的例子,说得真好
請問 "some other" 後面有沒有限定可數或不可數?
看到一個說法是"some other"後面要加單數不可數名詞, 可是查了Longman電子字典的解釋是:
"used to refer to a different person or thing from the one you have already mentioned or the one that is already known about" --> 沒有特別說明可數還是不可數, 可是舉的例子剛好是單數不可數:
Can we discuss this some other time?
然後上google查, 裡面可數不可數都有...
請問有誰有比較確切的答案嗎? 因為我實在看不出ETS認為 "lack of some other doctor" unidiomatic到底是因為doctor該改成複數, 還是因為some other應該要接不可數名詞...
請各位NN們協助~!!!
楼主说的倒装好象只用于句首吧?
我觉得some other doctor是对的,some不是可以作“某个”讲吗?
testify可以作vt.,作vi.一般和to连用,所以这里的testify about应该不对
个人意见,仅供参考!!
lack n.(名词)
A deficiency or an absence:
缺乏或没有:
a lack of money.
缺乏金钱
Lack emphasizes the absence of the thing in question or the inadequacy of its supply:
Lack 强调的必须品的缺乏或其供应的不足:
She lacks the money to buy new shoes.
她没钱买新鞋。
The plant died because it lacked moisture.
这株植物因为缺乏水分而死。
What he lacks in courage he compensates for in bravado.
他用虚张声势来弥补自己勇气的匮乏。
上面讲的是作动词的情况,作名词应该也有这个意思
嗯...確實是有"some other day"這樣的說法, 可是我之前是把它理解成慣用語, 所以沒特別考慮這一點...
wwwhahchn JJ的意思是本句要考慮的是缺乏的是 "醫生證明", 而非"醫生"本身對嗎? 句意上我可以理解, 也同意這個說法, 只是OG把"lack of some other doctor" 解釋成"unidiomatic", 而不是"illogical", 我覺得ETS是認為這種用法不正確, 可是我看不出來哪裡unidiomatic啊?
在GMAT裡面,要用another one, 不能用 some other one,
some other one 累贅,且不被認為是合適的idom.
D中哪里有if了呀,为什么说成是"if虚拟的倒装",有这种米有"if"的虚拟么?
