我在想是不是限定性定语从句 和非限定性从句的区别。。
请指点下吧。。。。。。

D选项,when placed in a ...省略的逻辑主语和句子主语是一样的。因此,逻辑上来说省略的应该是mice,将mice放在刺激的环境。但是按D选项语法上来说,主语却是brain growth。于是逻辑意思就不合理了。 同理,D选项后半部分,they指代了前面的neurons,却不是canaries。也是指代错误。

这里的确考到限定性定语从句。E选项就是用的限定性定语从句
曼哈顿给的定义是:限定性定语从句通常是that从句紧跟要限定的名词后面,从句去掉之后会影响意思或者对该名词的指代名义不明。譬如这里去掉that从句就无法知道是哪一类型的mice或者canaries。非限定性定语从句通常是名词与which从句被逗号隔开,从句去掉之后不会对该名词的指代名义不明,它给出的是关于这个名词额外的信息
本局的逻辑意思是要对这两者进行限定的,不是所有的mice or canaries都可以的。(D) 不选的原因有三,一是when从句没有起到限定的作用,反而不清楚它要修饰的对象是什么;二是两个when从句结构也不平行。严格来说第一个when后接的是短语而不是完整的主谓结构。还有一个原因就是GMAT不是很认同canaries' neurons的说法,因为他们觉得neurons in canaries很清楚地表达了neurons与canaries的关系。我记得有一题就是句子里有the Baltic sea sediment的正确选项改写为the sediment from the Baltic sea

稍有不同见解,我觉得没办法的,英语国家人比我们考verbal就是有优势的。
我觉得这个句子考的就是两点,一个是when或that的从句一定是修饰之前离的最近最近的名词的,然后就是从learn new songs作为已知条件,把that或when之间最近的名词带进去看意思就可以了。
只可能对的意思是:老鼠mice(而不是brain growth)可以被放进刺激的环境,金丝雀canaries(而不是neurons )可以学歌唱。
结果一查完发现就太清晰了,大家可能太偏技术面去想了。
D中,因为最后句末是learn new songs,是句子,那么如果是when+句子or when +句子的并列就对了。所以我觉得这么改那么D就业正确了:the brain growth in mice when they are placed in a stimulating environment or the increase in neurons in canaries when they

是的 这里的when从句不平行 这个是最容易看出来的考点。。。白痴了我
还有的确是GMAT里边出现所有格形式 ,基本上都不是正确选项
