这个解释我不太明白, filing和setting是否并列成分? 如果并列我认为要在setting 前面加个and. 如果他们不是并列, 那么setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered his property 在句中是什么成分? 谢谢指点!

不是并列，而是作结果状语。

谢谢，这个做结果状语确实比较好理解，setting free.... .. 修饰前面整个句子。

但我不理解ETS在这里的解释： "This sentence requires that the participial phrase setting free... connect to the gerund construction by filing a deed...; it was the filing of a deed that made possible the setting free.... "，似乎由于by filing .... 才需要setting free....... ，什么叫需要分词短语与by filing .... 相连－－－这不是对结果状语的要求。

这就是在解释为什么用结果状语的原因.

connect是意思上的关连,不是分词短语与by filing 要相连.

费希的意思是, setting free ........ 作 filing a deed of...... 的结果状语吧, 但是好像不对:

状语修饰动词, 而这里的filing 是动名词, 不是动词, 所以不能有状语. 这个状语要么修饰句子的谓语动词stunned 作伴随状语, 要么修饰整个句子做结果状语, 我想了半天感觉前者更正确.

那么它就是伴随状语, 就伴随状语的要求来说, 必定要用setting, 于是

ETS的这段解释根本就是乱解. 可俺又不是ETS的最大股东, 说了就算. 十分困惑, 请各路高手指点,作揖!

by 是个介词,后面接名词或者动名词, 所以filing 一定不是动词概念的词, 不能有状语. right?

个人认为做原因状语从句解释更贴切，

举例：He sent us an open letter, hoping to get our support.

因为希望得到我们的支持，所以他寄了一封信给我们

本文中

Robert Carter stunned his family, setting free ...

因为RC释放了他的奴隶，所以（结果）让他的家人感到很吃惊

请指教
