后面填so是因为it不能指代句子，it只能指代前文出现的词。 The first English settlers to establish a permanent colony in America did ___not at Plymouth but along the shore of the James River.
did so是指代establish a permanent colony in America。
第二句Tony cleaned house yesterday and he does it everyday.it指代的是house,而does替换了clean，如果动词是一样的，后面可以用do替换。
