C is misleading in that "if not" may mean "television can be not superficial". Or, to be easier to understand, "if" may mean "if only".

Thanks tianwan, but still a little confused. Why the original sentence can be what (C) expresses. Among all the five choices, is there any one that set the tone of the meaning, is it (A)? But what if there is logic error in (A). Help please!

actually, A sets the tone of E, only that "such as" plus a clause is ugly, and "each" as subject in the when clause should follow a singular verb form. In E, "as when" is idiomatic(don't ask me why, some NN has proved it), and "each" as a appositive doesn't ruin the correctness of the plural verb form.
