the amount of 短语中心词是amount，用单数；

a amount of 表量多，后跟不可数。the amount of 有表总数，总量的意思。通常+不可数，但也会有复数形式出现（有待更多的考证）。

In an invoice the amount of money should be written both in words and in figures.

The amount of his remarks is that ...remarks复数，但意思上不是强调remarks的数量，而是remarks总的意思。

写了些皮毛，还需要再总结。

我认为是这样的，即使日常应用中有特例，GMAT应该也不会把这种大是大非的问题模糊化.

a large amount of money; an amount of diplomacy;

I saw a great amount of them. (是说见的多，不是人数多).

由Jerry提供的例子看，the amount of 可跟复数形式，只不过其后的复数名词，理解上更象是个不可数的。
