暂且不论其他错误，单单想问的是在这里whom和选项C中的them的用法有什么区别？
OG对C的解释为:C The reference of them is unclear and the
expression is generally awkward.
为什么whom指代people就对了，而用them就不可以。。

等待NN解答。

是有很大区别的。
用many of who只是一个定语从句。如果用many of them就是可以做主语了，会变成两个句子，这两个句子是没有连词的。

有。whom引导从句，many of them要么新起一句句子，要么引导独立主格或同位语。成分不同，例：
(1)CD has a huge number of members,many of them struggle for futher study.明显可以看出其一山不容二虎的主语过多错误
若改成如下可接受：
(2)CD has a huge number of members,many of whom struggle for futher study.此时逗号后是一句从句，符合语法规则。

为什么whom指代people就对了，而用them就不可以。。
",whom"就进修饰逗号前，类似which
them就是很普通的代词了，所以whom指代更清晰

有。whom引导从句，many of them要么新起一句句子，要么引导独立主格或同位语。成分不同，例：

为什么我觉得视它为一个同位语从句没啥不可呢 = =

这个地方我们可以从这几个方面去理解，一是前面已经明确的指出Laos了，but后面再说一次会很冗余，二是这个句子明显改变了原句的重心，原句的意思是L和G一样大，但是L的人口缺只有4million，这些人大多数是……，在C选项中，这个地方把句子意思改成了L和G一样大，但是大多数在L4million的人……。三是这个地方会让人疑虑land area和size可不可以进行比较，但是OG没有说这一点，，待考证

总结一下，大家对于them在此的指代问题解释有以下几种：
1、“in Laos with a population of four million people”是一个介词短语，可以忽略，因此them无所指代
2、them 和it相似，只能指代前面整个句子的主语，而不能指代宾语，因此这里知道“Laos”，造成逻辑错误

向NN请教求证以上说法是否正确！

个人认为上面这位的解释是正确的：

them和whom在此处有2个主要区别：

1.whom是关系代词(Relative Pronouns)，引导关系从句，也就是说whom所在句子必须是从句，无法单独成句(没有完整的主谓结构)。
them是人称代词，在句子中作宾语，也就是说them所在的句子是并列句的一部分或者说them所在的句子可独立成句(有完整的主谓结构)

2.whom 只能指代人；且",whom"结构必须严格的就近修饰其指代的人。

them是人称代词(Personal Pronouns)，复数，即可指人，又可指物(refer to a group of people, animals, or things)，对就近修饰没有严格的要求。

但是，them和whom还有一些用法需要注意，例如同位语中的many of them，many of whom，具体用法见下帖：
