标题: OG12-14
Sunspots, vortices of gas associated with strong electromagnetic activity, are visible as dark spots on the surface of the Sun but have never been sighted on the Sun’s poles or equator.
(A) are visible as dark spots on the surface of the Sun but have never been sighted on
(B) are visible as dark spots that never have been sighted on the surface of the Sun
(C) appear on the surface of the Sun as dark spots although never sighted at
(D) appear as dark spots on the surface of the Sun, although never having been sighted at
(E) appear as dark spots on the Sun’s surface, which have never been sighted on

答案是A,OG针对C的解释是:Although typically intriduce a subordinate clause, which has a subject and a verb, but here there is no suject and sighted is not a complete verb

跟人觉得,虽然这个从句没有主语,但由于sighted是过去分词,其主语等于主句主语。这样的话,这个从句就不需要主语了,不是吗?

谢谢

Generally speaking, "although" can introduces either a subordinate clause or a non-finite verb phrase.
But in this question, we contrast "are visible on the surface" and "have never been sighted on the poles and equator".
If we use two parallel sentences(as in A) or two parallel phrases, the contrast is enhanced.
This is the reason why the "sentence + phrase" structure in C is not preferred.

应该是 be sighted, sighted 是形容词,不是谓语

我觉得是visible和appear的区别吧。appear表示to come into sight,有个动态的过程。不对的话请更正

Yes, it is another problem of parallel.

The pretty parallel structure should be "something is visible" vs "something hasn't been sighted".

"sth. appears" doesn't parallel with "sth. hasn't been sighted".

never sighted at the Sun’s poles or equator, Sunspots, vortices of gas associated with strong electromagnetic activity, appear on the surface of the Sun as dark spots .
不知道这样对不对啊
