Several studies have found that the coronary patients who exercise most actively have half or less than half the chance of dying of a heart attack as those who are sedentary.
A. have half or less than half the chance of dying of a heart attack as those who are sedentary
B. have half the chance, or less, of dying of a heart attack than those who are sedentary do
C. have half the chance that they will die of a heart attack, or less, than those who are sedentary do
D. are at least fifty percent less likely to die of a heart attack as those who are sedentary
E. are at least fifty percent less likely than those who are sedentary to die of a heart attack
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9402E0D61239F935A25754C0A963948260&sec=health&spon=&pagewanted=all
The early studies of the San Francisco longshoremen, the British civil servants and others suggested that coronary patients who are most active have half or less the chance of dying of a second heart attack as those who are sedentary.
E里面的 at least fifty percent less 是对half or less than half 的改写half or less than half 比较wordy, be less likely to die比 have less the chance of dying,就GMAC而言of doing的形式通常没有be likely to do不定式表意明确,而且die这样的瞬间名词不适合of doing的形式。
B中补出的助动词do 只能对应前面的have,不能对应die of a heart attack从而改变了原句的意思
NYTIMES
The early studies of the San Francisco longshoremen, the British civil servants and others suggested that coronary patients who are most active have half or less the chance of dying of a second heart attack as those who are sedentary.
A. have half or less than half the chance of dying of a heart attack as those who are sedentary
我同意A
1,考题明显希望通过“less than half" 和“less likely” 做陷阱混淆AS和than的使用,BCD排除。
2,A的用法类似于same as, A have the same/half the chance of doing sth as B,没有问题
3,E中,to die of a heart attack的位置本来没有问题,但放在这一句中就会产生歧义,变成be sedentary to die of a heart attack.
Several studies have found that the coronary patients who exercise most actively have half or less than half the chance of dying of a heart attack as those who are sedentary.
的结构表示量的比较结构的句子,事实上你是找不到的,量的比较只有以下两大类种:第一类:the same as/as many as/as much as/X times as many as(确定比例) 第二类 more than/less than(不确定比例)
另外half or less than half比较wordy,如果是half or less还读得顺些,不过这里A不正确的主要原因就像解释里所说的,as单个不能进行比较,在GMAT的语法中!
B中补出的助动词do 只能对应前面的have,不能对应die of a heart attack从而改变了原句的意思
B选项中have和die of a heart attack不是并列关系吧? B选项缩写出来应该是"have the chance of dying of a heart attack than..."
常考句型:sb be less likely/more likely than sb to do....
