A recent study has found that within the past few years, many doctors have elected to retire early rather than face the threats of lawsuits and the rising costs of malpractice insurance.

Pattern 2:
Alternatives presented in the expressions X rather than Y, and X instead of Y should be parallel in form

Pattern 8:

Depends on if (Incorrect)

WHETHER is preferable in presenting the situation as possible rather than conditional or hypothetical.

Pattern 9:

The clause beginning Since 1986 indicates that the practice described in the second clause continued for some period of time

existed between Siberiaand Alaska.

here have migrated is wrong, since it resembles present perfect, something which is still happening, since its the past, we

need just migrated.
migrated to the Western Hemisphere over a bridge of land that once existed between Siberiaand Alaska.

Pattern 26:

Usage of Past Perfect

After the Civil War, contemporaries of Harriet Tubman's maintained that she has all of the qualities of a great leader:

Pronoun Patterns

1 . Make sure you check these three when you find a pronoun

   1. Pronoun Antecedent
   2. Pronoun Agreeement
   3. Pronoun Case

Pronoun case, implies, that for personal, possessive form of pronoun the right pronoun is used

When a possessive noun is used a possessive pronoun is needed.

its and their are possessive forms of it and they subjective pronouns. Use its if the subject is a possessive pronoun.
Use their when the subject is possessive plural.

Janice and Me went to picnic together
Janice and I went to picnin together

here the subject is Janice and I so I is used instead of I, which is objective. Find the subject and see if the pronoun case of the subject is chosen.

Pattern 1

Pattern 1
The only way to salvage..... is to process

Pattern 2.
organism's trying to
organim's attempt to(c)
trying is used as an object to organism
Pattern 3.

the production of enzymes that are the organism's attempt to
the sentence uses the linking verb "are" to equate enzymes and attempt

Pattern 4.

Pattern 10. idiomatic
x and y can be crucial
how x and how y can be crucial
It is well known in the supermarket industry that how items are placed on shelves and the frequency of inventory turnovers can be crucial to profits.
how frequently is the inventory turned overare often(IC)
how frequently the inventory turns over can be(C)

Pattern11. passive voice parallelism
 were aired...were moved..

were first aired on evening radio in the 1920's,they were moved to the daytime hours in the1930's

Pattern 12. Persuaded X to [do] Y
You need to find the exact location of sentence flow, for parallelism, this way you will understand whether it needs a participle or a gerund or a verb. Look at the below example
Joan of Arc, a young Frenchwoman who claimed to be divinely inspired, turned the tide of English victories in her country by liberating the city of Orleans and she persuaded Charles VII of France to claim his throne.
here i HAVE assumed that, the split in the sentence is from by liberating an hence I chose the below answer from the choices
persuading that the throne be claimed byCharles VII of France
instead of
persuaded Charles VII of France to claim histhrone
if you see again, the choice you chose inturnly has couple of errors, like passive voice, be claimed by charles 7. sO when a choice is made make sure it doesnt have any other errors, as Pearson keeps atleast 2 errors in a wrong choice. A wrong choice always smells more bad.

Pattern 13. Usage of that;
I assumed that when somebody said something, use that to tell more about it when its needed. For this example
Judge Bonham denied a motion <to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day instead of to confine them> to a hotel.
here look at denied a motion, I thought using that would intensify and eliminated choices which donot fall into it, this way the correct answer was eliminated. Always, when eliminating, you need to have a clear rule from OG or SC, for removing it, dont go with the assumed ones are feel good one's. Remember low score the result, of such. be responsible

According to "Cracking The GMAT" (Princeton Review 2005 Edition), the most common errors to look for when you read a sentence correction question are:

1. Pronoun Errors: If a sentence contains a pronoun, check to see whether it clearly refers to the noun it is replacing; also check to see whether the pronoun agrees in numer with the noun to which it refers.

2. Misplaced Modifiers: If the sentence begins with a modifying phrase, check to make sure that the noun it modifies comes directly after the modifying phrase.

3. Parallel Construction: If a sentence contains a list of things, or actions, or is broken up into two halves, check to make sure the parts of the sentence are parallel.

4. Tense: If the answer choices contains different verb tenses, make sure that the tense of the verb or verbs in the original sentence is correct. For the most parts, verb tense should be consistent throughout a sentence.

5. Sentence-Verb Agreement Errors: ETS sometimes put extraneous prepositional phrases between the subject and the verb. Cover up these phrases so that you can see whether the subject and the verb of each clause in the sentence agree with each other.

6. Idiom: If a sentence contains an idiomatic expression that seems wrong to you, try taking the expression out of the sentence and creating a sentence of your own with the suspect expression.

7. Apples-and-Oranges: When a sentence makes a comparison, check to see whether the two things compared are really comparable.

8. Quantity words: Whenever you see a quantity word (countable vs. uncountable; two vs. three or more) check to see if it used correctly.

You can expand your list to include as many types of errors as you like. Obviously the more types of errors you can identify, the better prepared you'll be to take the test. But you should bear in mind that while there are other types of errors, these errors don't come very often on the GMAT. Some of the other errors to consider: redundant words, misuse of the subjuntive mood, and the use of the passive voice when the active voice is possible.

PS: About one-fifth of the sentences are correct as they are.

Due to vs Because Of

Since February, the Federal Reserve has raised its short-term interest rate target five times, and because of the economys continued strength, analysts have been predicting for weeks that the target will be raised again in November.

  1. because of the economys continued strength, analysts have been predicting for weeks that the target will

  2. with the economys strength continuing, analysts predicted for weeks that the target

  3. because the economy continues strong, analysts predicted for weeks that the target would

  4. due to the economys continued strength, analysts have been predicting for weeks that the target

  5. due to the fact of the economys continued strength, analysts predicted for weeks that the target will

    Because of vs Due To

    1. Because of is kind of an adverb, while due to is an adjective
    2. Adjectives modify nouns or pronouns, adverbs modify only verbs
    3. Because of is similar to an adverbial phrase, while due to an adjective phrase
    4. Remember to ask the question "why" when using "because of" since it acts as an adverbial phrase

    Example:
    His defeat was
              because of/due to
    the lottery issue

    Noun: Defeat
    Verb: Was
    What to use?
    1. Ask question why? like, his defeat was why? doesnt make sense right so due to is the answer

    Example 2 :
He was defeated because of/due to the lottery issue.

Ask q why? He was defeated why? makes sense right? Use Because of.

Its not simple as with the above rules, but we need to find what are we modifying in the sentence after because of or due to . if its a noun, use due to or else use becuase of. Again

Because of - Modifies verbs only
    Due to       - Modifies Nouns/Pronouns.

A: Because of the economy's continued strength, analysts have been predicting for weeks that the target will be raised again in November.

    D:  D
ue to the economy's continued strength, analysts have been predicting for weeks that the target be raised again in November.

I feel in both of these sentences we are talking about strength of the economy which is a noun. So D is correct.

I know this is a long post, Feel free to comment on this, It took me 1 hour to post this, since I did some research on Due to vs Because of. So feel free to negate any arguments which you find disputable, this way I will also learn if I didnt get the right point.

Less vs Fewer

(Not sure with the answer I have posted, lot say it is E, based on comparison rule)
Because natural gas is composed mostly of methane, a simple hydrocarbon, vehicles powered by natural gas emit less of certain pollutants than the burning of gasoline or diesel fuel.

(A) less of certain pollutants than the burning of gasoline or diesel fuel

(B) fewer of certain pollutants than burning gasoline or diesel fuel do

(C) less of certain pollutants than gasoline or diesel fuel

(D) fewer of certain pollutants than does burning gasoline or diesel fuel

(E) less of certain pollutants than those burning gasoline or diesel fuel

Fewer for countable (Fewer Days)

Less for uncountable (less water)

pollutants are countable, like, X pollutants are damaging the environement.

So fewer, B, D Remain.

Will go with B.  Since does is singular(D) while do is plural. We need a plural verb, do, for the subject of pollutants, which is plural

another def

use fewer to modify a plural (countable) noun eg. i have fewer papers to write than last year

use less for singular noun- eg you will need less paper if u type your report

less is also used for - sums of money, periods of time, distance, when citing statistical or numerical data

Seems like answer is E, as most of the people mention that amounts of pollutants are countable compared to pollutants. Also the comparison rule is broken here in B.
------------------------------
Apart from the comparison that clear in E ... i also went for E because we say ...

a vehicle emits less gas or a vehicle emits more gas

We wont say a vehicle emits few gas

-------------------------------
fewer of is not grammattically sound corrct

9. A new hair-growing drug is being sold for three times the price, per milligram, as the drug’s maker charges for another product with the same active ingredient.

A.      as

B.      than

C.      that

D.      of what

E.      at which

ANSWER:  C  I have researched this question, both here on ST and in the grammar/style texts, and I cannot find any support for D in this case (or, generally, as "of what" is simply poor style, even when it is not grammatically incorrect). This is a question that deals with correct usage of a relative pronoun (that, which, who, whom, what, and whose). The function of a relative pronoun is to introduce a subordinate clause and relate it to another antecedent word or idea. In this sentence, that idea is "...three times the
price..." The relative pronouns which would work here are: that and which (not "what," not "of what, not "at which"). So, A, B, D, and E do not work with this construction. And, by the way, "of what" can nearly always be said in a better, more stylistically acceptable fashion. This sentence should read, "A new hair-growing
drug is being sold for three times the price, per milligram, that the drug's maker charges for another product with the same active ingredient." The first part of the sentence is the main (or independent) clause. The last part of the sentence is the subordinate (or dependent) clause. "That" refers to "three times the price" clearly and it introduces the subordinate clause correctly. C is the best answer, FOR THIS CONSTRUCTION. If "the price" were omitted from the sentence, then this would be correct, "A new hair-growing drug is being sold for three times, per milligram, what the drug's maker charges for another product with the same active ingredient." But, even with this construction, "of what" does not work.
