251：greater这个形容词一般形容"mass noun", 如density (大全161），这里要体会number和numbers的细微不同：
number: A total; a sum: the number of feet in a mile.
numbers: A large quantity; a multitude: Numbers of people visited the fair.
区别和细微，但还是能体会出来。

896: 没有明白你的意思

plural: a numerous group : MANY

本题中的numbers应该理解为“群体”：
其群体现在比以前大5倍。

我认为its numbers 的用法没有错误这里不选its numbers的原因是A B后面都没有补出比较对象如果B改为 its numbers are now five times more than those were 我觉得是可以的。

下面的句子同样是说鸟类数量的。
Brazilian Guitarfish Rhinobatos horkeli： This is a species of ray found along the coast of southern Brazil. Its numbers have declined by 96% between 1984 and 1994 due to over-fishing.

刚才忘记了补充下

number本身可以做可数名词含义是a particular example of something, means a particular quantity. 例： He's got all the back numbers of the magzine. 这里的numbers不是许多而是magzine的确切数量。

251这个题目中的numbers表达的也正是这个意思，此时的number是可数名词。所以its numbers的用法没有问题。

为何不是复数their bodies？

这题记得我曾经讨论过

这种复数代词带单数名词的用法英语并不少见，表达的意思就是每一个例：Despite age or weight, most judge their body size good enough. 这里的用body表示大多数人都认为各自的身材不错。

所以原文要表达的是这些神经细胞平均分布在这些蜘蛛纲类动物各自的身体里。

从数学的角度可能更容易理解有两组人各为A:10人 B:20人现在分苹果每组30个苹果那么各自平均分就是A组每人三个苹果 B组每人一个半而全部平均分每个人则是两个有差别。

这题好像我做OG的时候也错了当时就是没注意now比较结果现在还是错晕◎！不过这下应该记牢了。。。

不过我还是觉得这里的numbers解释为确切数量比解释为群体更贴切一些。
Maybe today's opening bell dive is somehow related to Intel announcing that it would not make its numbers after the close yesterday.

这里的numbers不能解释为群体吧？

同意把their body理解为“它们各自的身体”。不可以是their bodies，否则“把它们的神经细胞平均地分布在它们的身体中”容易引起混乱。以为是全部平分。实际上是自己把自己的神经细胞平均地分布在自己的身体中，只不过大家都这么做，所以有了THEIR。

有点象下面的题目中的a bicycle：
864. Three out of every four automobile owners in the United States also own a bicycle.
(A) Three out of every four automobile owners in the United States also own a bicycle.
(B) Out of every four, three automobile owners in the United States also owns a bicycle.
(C) Bicycles are owned by three out of every four owners of automobiles in the United States.
(D) In the United States, three out of every four automobile owners owns bicycles.
(E) Out of every four owners of automobiles in the United States, bicycles are also owned by three.

这个题目也就这么结了！

这里的number不是数字的意思也不是群体很多的意思而是确切数量的意思可数名词因为这种鸟的数量肯定不止一只所以用numbers。

mm, i just check the dictionary, it says nothing about when to use 'number' over 'numbers'. Actually, what you are trying to approve is that' numbers ' is not acceptable. i don't agree with that. Both ' number' and 'numbers' are good. It depends on the logic meaning of the sentence.

还是理解为群体好，逻辑上很多的个体构成一个群体。所以NUMBERS很形象。

而且NUMBER就有数量的意思，为何用NUMBERS来表示数量呢？
the number of elderly is rising

另外，你举的例子中的NUMBERS的确不可以解释为群体，但不能就些判断这个题目就不可以呀。

俺不是学语言的，没资格评说numbers对不对，但俺看了诸位的引经据典，觉着即使让学家们来谈这个没几篇论文也谈不出所以然，所以既然不是主要考点，而且gmat也不是语言考试，咱不如把它当笔误过吧。

896. 解剖性的词常用单数.CELLS是为了讲一个BODY中DISTRIBUTED的CELL,所以是复数.此考点无聊.
