选E,不过E中的2个并列成分中what patients eat是当成名词了,而 when they eat it也可以这样当作名词用了吗?

补全了应该是

有道理，这里的WHEN应该是一种变体。

it 在这里指代食物。

没有it少宾语，怎么能成立呢？？？when 是表状语啊

仔细想了一下，还是这个解释最有道理。

not only by what patients eat but also by when they eat it=

not only by the food that patients eat but also by the time at which they eat it

by后面接两个名词food, time, 后面的是从句修饰这个名词

这样这个it和when的问题都能够解释了

我同意答案E，但对于排除其他选项有不同的理解。

(A) not only by
the foods patients eat but also by when the patients eat them

A的主要错误我觉得不仅仅是平行的问题，而是限定性修饰从句patients eat少了代词that。

C的错误不光是被动语态不如主动语态，更严重的是time when the foods are eaten根本未提及patients，产生了歧义，即只和食物被吃掉的时间有关，而无所谓是不是patients吃掉的。

不知道这样理解对不对，恳请大牛指点！！
