2. Those who have visited the Grand Canyon have typically seen layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, with different colors that mark the passage of time like the rings in a tree trunk.
(A) seen layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, with different colors that mark
(B) see layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, whose different colors mark
(C) been seeing layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, whose different colors are markers of
(D) been able to see layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, with different colors marking
(E) seen layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, marking by different colors

The key to getting the right answer for this question is recognizing that the underlined portion of the sentence should not contain pronoun. The answer choices give you the option of replacing with different colors with whose different colors but the second option is wrong because, if you added whose, it could refer to thelayers or the Canon, and whenever a pronoun has more than one possible antecedent (the thing it refer to), it's used incorrectly. Eliminate (B) and (C). (A) is correct.
Eliminate (E) as well because the subject of "marking" is similarly unclear; is it the layer or the Canyon this is marking the passage of time? And (A) is better than (D) because, once again, see is better than the wordier alternative been able to see. (A) is correct

A中“,with different colors that mark”感觉应该理解成状语修饰主句或者说就是修饰前面的动词seen。
D的able to多余; 如果with different colors marking是个独立主格结构表原因, 将这个结构还原 because different colors mark the passage of time like the rings, those who have visited the Grand Canyon have typically
been able to see layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, 但mark和be able to see没有明显的因果关系; 如果
because layers’ colors marking the passage of time like the rings is different, those…been able to see….

Under the restructuring, the huge organization that operates the company’s basic businesses will be divided into five groups, each with its own executive.

(A) each with its own executive

(B) all having their own executive

(C) each having their own executive

(D) with its own executive for each

(E) every one with an executive of their own

答案a

Those who have visited the Grand Canyon have typically seen layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, with different colors that mark the passage of time like the rings in a tree trunk.
(A) seen layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, with different colors that mark
(E) seen layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, marking by different colors

A is clear and concise, just as good as it can be.

E is not right b/c the clause marking by different colors has several mistakes: 1) Marking refers to who? 2) to make it worse, is this passive? 3)awkward

Hence, the correct answer is A

将这个结构还原 because different colors mark the passage of time like the rings, those who have visited the Grand Canyon have typically
been able to see layers of sediment in the gaping canyon, 但mark和be able to see没有明显的因果关系; 如果
because layers’ colors marking the passage of time like the rings is different, those…been able to see….

是怎么把have been able to see 排出的?

don't understand what you mean? why do you want to change it to 因果关系?

I think A is correct. with 短语修饰layers of sendiment,因为太长所以放在后面,中间有逗号表示with短语不是修饰canyon.D项be able to, 表示经过一番努力才看到的,colors 的存在是客观的,看到layers of sendiment 也是必然的,不需要游客在作出什么特别的努力。 原文讲的是colors mark the passage of time,E 讲得是layers of sendiment/canyons mark the passage of time by colors.

From Longman:
a)to have the skill, strength, knowledge etc needed to do something:
b) to be in a situation in which it is possible for you to do something:

原文讲的是colors mark the passage of time,E 讲得是layers of sendiment/canyons mark the passage of time by colors.
E同意。

Last but not least, thanks for the reply.

to have the skill, strength, knowledge" 不正表示需要经过个人主观努力得到的嘛。 be able to有时用于将来时或者完成时代替can. 至于with放在句末,如果紧跟着layers,那么in canyon就得挪到tree trunk 后面,更歧义(layers in the canyon or tree trunk in the canyon."
