Most of Portugal’s 250,000 university students boycotted classes in a one-day strike to protest a law that requires them to contribute $330 a year toward the cost of higher education, previously paying $7 per year.

  1. year toward the cost of higher education, previously paying $7 per year

  2. year toward the cost of higher education, for which was previously paid $7 per year

  3. year, compared to the previously $7 per year, toward the cost of higher education

  4. year toward the cost of higher education, instead of the $7 per year required previously
  5. year as opposed to the $7 per year required previously for the cost of higher education

答案是D,为什么B不对. which指代the cost

是这样的,  for which was previously paid $7 per year明显存在动作发出者不明的情况,这在商业英语中是绝对不允许的

compared to是比喻的意思,即把A比作B. A和B不同;比较要用compare with,即把A和A'的不同点区分开,A和A'是同类.

还是没明白, which指代the cost of higher education啊.

Most of Portugal’s 250,000 university students boycotted classes in a one-day strike to protest a law that requires them to contribute $330 a year toward the cost of higher education, for which(the cost of higher education) was previously paid $7 per year.

which修饰了higher education

higher education was paid for $7 per year

  1. year toward the cost of higher education, for which was previously paid $7 per year

为什么which不指代核心词the cost,这样还原一下: the cost was paid for $7 per year,就通了

C,compare A to B 才是比喻的意思,单独使用compare to可以作为比较的意思,这样一来C表达的最清楚,比较的东西在一起

101.Unlike the United States, where farmers can usually depend on rain or snow all year long, the
rains in most parts of Sri Lanka are concentrated in the monsoon months,June to September, and
the skies are generally clear for the rest of the year.
(A) Unlike the United States, where farmers can usually depend 0n rain or snow all year
long, the rains in most parts of Sri Lanka
(B) Unlike the United States farmers who can usually depend on rain or snow all year
long.the rains in most parts of Sri Lanka
(C) Unlike those of the United States, where farmers can usually depend on rain or snow all
year long, most parts of Sri Lanka's rains
(D) In comparison with the United States, whose farmers can usually depend on rain or
snow all year long, the rains in most parts of Sri Lanka
(E) In the United States, farmers can usually depend on rain or snow all year long, but in
most parts of Sri Lanka the rains
Logical predication
The intent of the sentence is to compare seasonal rainfall patterns in the United States and Sri
Lanka. There are many ways to set up such comparisons:unlike x, y;in comparison with x, y:
compared to x, y,
and so on.The x and y being compared must be grammatically and logically
parallel. An alternative way of stating the comparison is the use of two independent clauses
connected by but.The original sentence compares the United States to rains in most parts of Sri
Lanka;this illogical comparison cannot convey the writer's intention.

B, which 引导一个非限制性定语从句,语法上修饰“the higher education”,但是逻辑上应该修饰the cost ,所以不是最佳。

B错在for which的修饰对象上。
而且pay foreducation就好了,pay for the cost of education就redundant了。

C错在previously是副词,不能修饰名词dollars,如果改为compared to $7 per year required previously就好了

D就是把我上面改C那句,compared to换成了instead of。

previously for the cost of higher education应该是$330 a year $7 per year 公用的,而不只是修饰$7per year的。

即便 compare to 和 compare with 可以通用,也不能选 C。

B 定语从句 for which was previously paid $7 per year. for which 在从句中是状语,was paid 缺少对象。试比较 for which they paid $7

争议从B开始,但B中for which的which后面引出定语从句中缺少主语,如果改为for which $7 was previously paid per year才可以考虑。

Like the thorny ballooning of a frightened pufferfish or the sudden appearance of angry sapphire hoops for which the blue-ringed octopus is named, the California newt's display of its red underbelly is a clear warning that predators ignore at their peril.

As U.S. nuclear attack submarines prowl their familiar haunts deep within the oceans of the world these days, they increasingly are engaged in missins far different from the tasks for which they were built and for which their crews were trained over the last forty years. (E-P65-24)

During the recession of 1973, home mortgage foreclosures resulted in tens of thousands of Americans being evicted from homes for which they could no longer afford monthly payments.

With Massa’s departure, House Democrats need 216 votes, instead of 217, to pass health care legislation.

Cuomo, who is widely expected to run for governor this year, has called for putting the pension fund under the control of a board of trustees, instead of the comptroller.

''This 'restoration' has been done in a very unprofessional way,'' Schweizer said in an e-mail message sent to the AP. ''Too many stones had been changed, instead of restoring.

和contribute money for sth.
