not so much 是修饰程度的意思。句子翻译：说失眠是一种病不如说失眠是对另一个问题的症状性的表现，也许仅仅是对某些药物的反应，也许是旅行前的焦虑，也许是面试前的紧张。

E是五个选项中相对最好的一个，但是but symptomatic跟an illness or a physical condition不平行，如果E改成下面这样就好了：
so much an illness or a physical condition but a symtom of another problem, maybe simply a reaction to certain medication, anxiety about travel, or stress before a job interview.

A错在so much位置放错；a reaction（单） to medications（复）不妥。
B错在so much位置放错；as后面要跟名词symptom；may be a simple one笨拙且扭曲句意；like用作举例错，应该such as；a reaction caused by不对，应该是a reaction to；medications复数错。
C错在as simple as扭曲句意，句子本意是simply仅仅，只不过的意思，而不是说那个problem简单；when certain medications cause a reaction笨拙。
D错在逗号把原来的整句分割成两部分，使not so much...but...意思有程度上的改变；a simple one错；like错；medications causing a reaction这里需要的中心词是reaction，而不是medications.

"not so much A as B" is idiom 意思为：与其说A不如说B

我也同意选A。
E答案严重不平行，而且前面所说的A的问题也都不存在。so much as这种用法是对的，后面啊 a reaction to mediations也没问题。

symptom as simple as/like 与后头的比较对象不构成平行

C.as simple as 前：a symptom VERSUS 后：when certain medications cause a reaction；没有构成平行结构

D. "a simple one like certain medications causing a reaction";

like前后比较应该也要平行，此处失败，变成－－－前：a symptom VERSUS 后：certain medications causing
