Need help with a problem , SC # 4  in og 11th edition

A survey by  the national councile of churchese showed that in 1986 there were 20763 female ministers . almost 9 percent of the nation's clergy , twice as much as 1977

a twice as much as 1977

b twice as many as 1977

c double what it was in 1977

d double the figure for 1977

correct ans is d . I knew why the others is wrong , But Why " double " shouldn't it be doubled . Since the whole sentence is using past tense ..

Thanks in advance for answering my quesion

From the OG:

Some quantities, such as people, can be counted; other quantities, such as repsect, cannot.  It can be said that a person earned much respect, or that many people attended an event.  Here, much is incorrectly applied ot the ministers.  As 1977 incorrectly completes the comparsion; it would have to be as many as in 1977, which is not one of the possible answers.  Another way to make the comparsion emphasizes the number, 20,736; a number can be doubled.  Double the figure for 1977 places the focus on the number and correctly completes the comparsion.

A. Much incorrectly refers to ministers; as should be as in
B. As 1977 does not correctly complete this comparsion; it should be as in 1977
C. What it was is awkward, wordy and unclear
D. Correct.  Double the figure places the emphasis of the sentence on the number of ministers; for 1977 correctly completes the comparsion.
E. Wordy and awkward construction

Hope that helps!

ya,I've read the notes from OG before I post this question after LZ.

OG doesn't explain why not "doubled".

Anyway,thanks for your help

I think that it is a matter of diction.  To me, "double" is a transition verb, which means to make twice as many.  For example, my company doubled my salary.  The government doubled the tax.  Here we are looking for a quantitative state of describing the increase in female ministers.  Twice should be used instead of double.

"double the figure for 1977" 是在陈述一个事实,这里不存在过去关系。

double和 twice在这里是一样的,并非动词,please look up "double"in the dictionary

Thanks for all the replis . But I am still confusing here.

if double is not verb here , what is it?

if it is adj , it should be the double figure , like a double bed

If it is adv , where is the word "double" modifies?

OR, double the figure is a positive statment , just address a fact .

there were 20763 female ministers . almost 9 percent of the nation's clergy ,isn't it just also address a fact ??

here comes my question, since it is a complete sentence before the word "almost",why not use doubling? If double is correct, where is the conjunction between these two sentences?

thx!

My 2 cents.

The condos built up in this area are twice the number in another area.

'double the number ' is an adjective phrase, a fixed usage.

刚查了张道真的词典,double这里是adj。。。

thanks,sunyi001.

LZ,double is a "predeteminer",not verb,not adjective,not adverb.

what's a 'predeteminer'? Can you please give us another example?
thx

double  predeterminer
double
twice as big, twice as much, or twice as many
double the amount/number/size etc

We'll need double this amount for eight people.

The value of the house is double what it was.

Thank you, bewithjessie

This is from American Heritage:
predeterminer - An adjectival word that can stand before an article, a possessive pronoun, or another determiner, as all in all the flowers or both in both his children.

Therefore, a predeterminer is a special kind of adjective. Can we then conclude that "double", as used here, is an Adj?

为何不查字典 ,查查朗文就知道了。不要忘了基本功。   这叫predeterminer  不是动词

To be frankly,I got to know "predeterminer" yesterday

And I think we know how to use it is enough,I don't care it's a special kind of adjective or predeteminer, that's merely a term, right?

A survey by  the national councile of churchese showed that in 1986 there were 20763 female ministers . almost 9 percent of the nation's clergy ,  double the figure for 1977

1 题干中的almost前面是逗号

2 almost 9 percent of the nation's clergy ,是插入语吗??

3 句子去掉almost 9 percent of the nation's clergy  变成

A survey by  the national councile of churchese showed that in 1986 there were 20763 female ministers double the figure for 1977

那么划线的红色部分是做什么成分呢??/
